Lorry Mounted Crane

Course Introduction

Our Lorry Mounted Crane course (commonly known as a HI-AB) is designed to provide learners with the necessary information, knowledge & skills to safely operate a Lorry Mounted Crane whilst at work.

On completion of this course, the learners will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Identify the operators’ responsibilities under current HSE legislation
  • Operate a Lorry Mounted Crane safely
  • Conduct a pre-use safety check on a Lorry Mounted Crane
  • Understand the responsibilities of the Lorry Mounted Crane operator
  • Identify possible workplace hazards (e.g. Manhole covers, overhead electric cables etc.)

A Lorry Mounted Crane course—commonly known as a HIAB course—is for individuals who operate commercial vehicles equipped with hydraulic loader cranes to load and unload cargo. Specifically, it applies to HGV drivers, builders’ merchants, delivery drivers, and construction site workers who need the legal certification and practical skills to safely manage these cranes. The training ensures operators understand weight limits, stabilizing techniques, and health and safety regulations, allowing them to work efficiently while maintaining compliance with UK safety laws.

This is a combined classroom and practical based course on the Basic Operation and Safe Use of the Lorry Loader Crane (Hi-Ab).

  • Maximum of 3 learners
  • Half day duration for experienced operators, 1 day for beginners
  • After successful completion candidates will be issued with an RTITB Lorry Mounted Crane pass Certificate  and an Operators Card which is registered  for 3 years.
  • Learners must bring with them their own Personal Protective Equipment. (i.e.  hard hat, high visibility jacket, gloves & safety boots)
